My abstract submission to the Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR) was accepted for their conference in Salt Lake City to be held 10-14 June. The program may be viewed here, and registration can be processed here. Following is the abstract I submitted:

Between postcolonial early republicanism and Protestant liberalism, the American metaphysical religion has been part of the shaping of national identity, both as a model of pluralism and a token of spiritual and political dynamism. This paper intends to show how the alternative religions/spiritualities such as the New Thought movement have stood as a significant social and political mirror of the postcolonial construction of American identity since the beginning of the 19th century.

I will first focus on the New Thought movement as a refuge for political upheavals ranging from conservatism to feminism and gender controversies. The movement has gathered paradoxes in both the political and spiritual areas, thus working as a metaphor of undercurrent genuine tensions among the population.

In addition, the American metaphysical religion has a new reality on the national stage with popular celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey. On September 23, 2001  in New York, Oprah Winfrey conducted a national, inter-religious service commemorating the catastrophe of the 9/11 attacks. This outstanding recognition for a newly successful businesswoman and spiritual leader, rallying up to 22 million viewers enhances the power of popular spirituality and metaphysics in the media and literature.

Through these two examples of the new Process New Thought and the Oprah phenomenon, we will try to show how religious pluralism has recently become a reality for any American in the definition of a national identity.

   Following is the abstract I submitted:

“The renewal of American metaphysical religion: an analysis of Christ Church Unity, Orlando, Florida, USA ”

Changing gods or believing in multiple gods: spirituality has become the hallmark of new religious movements for the past twenty years. The so-called American metaphysical religion is undergoing a renewal in terms of social, theological and philosophical contents.
This paper intends to show how tangible this renewal is through the example of Christ Church Unity, Orlando, which is a Unity church member of the International New Thought Alliance.

I will first focus on the importance of the metaphysical movement within the historical scope of American new religions, and the influence of Unity churches as co-founders of the movement called International New Thought Alliance. It  also touches on the religion by region aspect which reveals the relevance of denominational and non-denominational religious and spiritual groups’ influence within a specific geographical area.

Christ Church Unity, Orlando has been experiencing a significant and unexpected growth quite recently, more than doubling its membership. Our purpose will be to demonstrate why and how this phenomenon has taken place, and the way ministers and church organization respond to it. The sociological, cultural and spiritual aspects will be considered in order to synthesize our field research and survey. We will show that most of the newcomers have come for a specific purpose and originate from various social and religious backgrounds. In addition, our data disclose significant transformations within the metaphysical message of Christ Church Unity, moving from a ‘substance’ philosophy to a ‘process’ one.

Science, fables, chimères : croisements

L’histoire des sciences nous fournit de nombreux exemples de la façon dont l’imaginaire, la religion et la mythologie ont parfois entravé, parfois accompagné les découvertes scientifiques. S’il est vrai que des découvertes comme celles de Copernic, de Galilée ou de Darwin ont dû affronter les idées et croyances dominantes, il arrive à l’inverse que la connaissance implicitement présente dans la mythologie, l’art et la religion ouvre des voies nouvelles d’exploration et d’expression. C’est ainsi qu’histoires, fables et images se sont avérées très utiles pour reconstituer le passé, comprendre le présent ou imaginer l’avenir.

Cette journée d’étude a pour objet d’explorer ce va-et-vient entre art et science et d’illustrer par des exemples concrets ce que la science doit à l’imaginaire, et ce que l’imaginaire doit aux sciences. Elle s’adresse aux chercheurs de tous horizons, de l’histoire des sciences ou des religions à la littérature en passant par l’art et la philosophie.

Science, fables and chimera: strange encounters. One-day conference, Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse 3, France, June 10^th, 2011.

The history of science provides numerous examples of the way in which imagination, religion and mythology have sometimes helped, sometimes hindered scientific progress. While established ideas and beliefs clearly held back the discoveries of Copernicus, Galileo and Darwin, the implicit knowledge to be found in mythology, art and religion has often proved useful in indicating new ways in which to explore or represent new knowledge of the world. Stories, fables and images have often proved very useful in drawing a fuller picture of the past, understanding the present or imagining the future.

The aim of this conference is to question the rigidity of disciplinary boundaries and to show the dialogue between science and the humanities through specific examples or more general thematic analyses. Papers might consider the role of imagination in science in a given discipline, or address a particular notion at a specific period.

We invite scholars of any discipline and period to send their proposal for a 30-minute paper, with a short bio, to:

What does it mean to be “religious”or "spiritual" in the United States?

How can we identify the religious/spiritual subject, and how do these subjects imagine themselves?

My   research focuses on the problem of religious identity and the  importance of alternative spiritualities in America from early 19th  century to the present and the future. It goes back to the time when  religious orthodoxy, sexual identity, and modern definitions of the self   commingled during an epoch of profound technological, social, and  economic transformation. That is the starting point for a wider  spiritual, social and political phenomenon under the incentive of the  American metaphysical movement ( the New Thought Movement, in particular).
Post-modern   America has witnessed a resurgence of this phenomenon into a "third  way" offer in society including the mingling of metaphysical  perspectives with process thought, which might lead the path towards a new "liberalism"...

In   addition to this research, I have also been exploring the religious  contours of popular culture and new spirituality, particularly through  the example of Oprah Winfrey’s multimedia empire .The mass media and  popular culture might be a way for new spiritualities to foster a new  complete pluralistic national identity for the 21st century.
